Associate-Membership (AMNIStructE) recognises engineers with a sound practical grounding in structural engineering.
Who can apply
- You are at least 23 years old.
- You hold an accredited degree, or an accredited HND/Higher Diploma together with the appropriate Matching Section (further academic study).
- You have at least 3 years’ post-graduation experience in structural engineering and meet the Initial Professional Development (IPD) requirements.
How to qualify
You first take a Professional Review interview with senior members of the Institution. If it is successful, you qualify by one of three routes:
- Written examination – a six-hour test of elemental design and practical competence. You answer one question from a choice of four, on structural steelwork, reinforced concrete, general construction and bridges.
- Research – research or development work that you have carried out is assessed and accepted.
- Oral examination – if you are over 35, have at least 15 years’ experience and hold an appropriate qualification. You submit project work (three copies, with a main paper of no more than 5,000 words), followed by an interview of about an hour.
A Mature Candidate Route is also open to candidates over 35 with at least 10 years’ experience as a Technician Engineer in appointments of increasing responsibility.
Examination dates
The Associate-Membership and Part 3 examinations are held each August. Application forms (Form AM) must reach the Institution by 1 May.
