The Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers (NIStructE) was founded in Lagos, in 1967, by a group of British trained Nigerian Structural Engineers as an avenue for Professional Training and Development in the field of Structural Engineering in Nigeria with a view to producing professional Structural Engineers in line with the growth aspirations of the Federal Government of Nigeria.

The Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers is concerned with the general advancement of the science and art of Structural Engineering in Nigeria.

The Institution is also a qualifying body for Structural Engineers in Nigeria. In discharging her responsibilities in this regard, the Institution prescribes courses of study, arranges examinations and assesses training and experience of potential Structural Engineers.

  • Determine who is a Structural Engineer in Nigeria.
  • Determine what standards of knowledge and skills are required for somebody to be recognized as a Structural Engineer in Nigeria.
  • Admit members to the Nigerian Institution of Structural Engineers through a 7 hour, open book, Part 111 – Structural Engineering Examination.
  • Maintain a register of qualified Structural Engineers in Nigeria
  • Regulate and control the practice of Structural Engineering in close collaboration with COREN
  • Serve as a reference database for Structural Engineering manpower and Structural Engineering firms in Nigeria
  • Monitor and maintain best practice standards for Structural Engineering Service Delivery in Nigeria.

Brief Scope of Structural Engineering

Structural Engineering deals with the following areas of Engineering endeavor:
  • Building Structures – Bungalows and Multi Storey buildings.
  • Bridges and Culverts on Highways and Railways.
  • Marine Structures (Jetties, Quay walls, Ports and Shoreline protection works)
  • Masts and other Telecommunication Structures.
  • Swimming Pools, Water Tanks, including elevated Water Tanks
  • Dams and other Water Resources Engineering Structures, e.t.c

Professional Relations and Competence

Professional Relations

NIStructE merged with the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) on August 29, 1996, becoming the Structural Division of the NSE. We also maintain close professional collaboration with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN).

Membership and Qualifications

To be registered as a Structural Engineer with NIStructE, candidates must have the prescribed academic qualifications in Civil or Structural Engineering, a minimum of three years post-graduation experience, and pass the Institution's 7-hour Part III examination.

NIStructE boasts a robust list of Structural Engineers with world-class competence. Our members have designed and supervised the construction of significant structures, including the largest auditorium in the world and major sports stadiums.
