ANNOUNCES A 2-DAY TECHNICAL TRAINING ON

INTRODUCTION TO BRIDGE DESIGN

Course Overview:

With the ever-increasing need for more roads and railway facilities in Nigeria, there is urgent need for more bridge constructions and the strengthening of existing bridges mostly along national corridors. Hence, there is the need for capacity development and training for more bridge designers and engineers.

This course is being put together specifically to enhance knowledge and provide continuous development for interested participants in bridge engineering design.  It will deal exhaustively on all aspect of bridge design beginning from planning process and conceptual design considerations to development of detailed design stages.

The training will involve practical step by step design process and shall look at understanding various bridge deck forms, their complexities and respective structural behaviours required in developing suitable bridge design. Major focus in the training will be on bridge deck loading and analysis where considerable time will be given to identifying and idealizing principal actions on any bridge with analytical approaches for obtaining the corresponding deign governing effects.

Learning Outcome:

Participants will be able to do the following:

  1. Know how to start a bridge design.
  2. Plan, analyse and select suitable bridge site, forecast hydrological requirement for any bridge waterway opening.
  3. Conceptual ise and configure the bridge form, with justifiable basis for its deck type, span length and height of substructures.
  4. Obtain and simulate highway traffic loadings, construction loadings, environmental forces and accidental scenarios on a bridge.
  5. Idealise, model, analyse and design any bridge system against collapse events.

Course Contents:

Module 1:           Introduction & Conceptual Bridge Design Consideration –      Introduction, General Planning and Design Considerations, Choice of Bridge Site, Hydraulic Considerations, Factors affecting Design.

Module 2: Bridge Superstructure (Deck Structural Forms, Behaviour & Idealization) – Introduction, Deck General Considerations, Deck Structural Forms, Load Distribution Behaviour and Idealisation.

Module 3: Bridge Deck Loading & Analysis – Introduction, Highway definitions, Application of loads, Bridge deck analysis

Module 4:         Bridge Substructures (Abutment and Piers), Using StaadPro, SCIbridge and Sap2000 programs for linear and non-linear static analyses in bridges.

Who Should Attend:

This Training is suitable but not limited to Engineers, Designers and Draftsman in design offices, Construction Firms, Ministries, Agencies/Parastatals, Academic and Research Institutions.

Venue:                              NIStructE Secretariat 5, Akinhanmi Street, Surulere, Lagos.
